Congratulations to all of the Jr Gulls Memorial Day Tournament teams, it was a great weekend!!
The Jr Gulls Mite Team walked away with the championship banner in a spectacular victory over the LA Hockey Club. The Jr Gulls won the championship game 3-1, clinching a perfect 5-0 record for the weekend. Friday’s 5-3 victory over La Jolla started the weekend strong, and continued with a win against LAHC in a close 2-1 game on Saturday. Sunday’s game brought on the SD Saints and we walked away with a 9-0 win. The Sunday night crossover game was a walk in the park as well, facing the Saints one more time. On Monday, the team put together three solid periods against LAHC to win the championship and bring home the banner!
The Midget Open team also took the championship but in a much different fashion. The Bears were quick out of the gate and caught the Jr Gulls flat-footed in the first period and jumped to a 4-1 lead. The Gulls didn’t panic and stuck to the grind and cut away at the lead, 2-4, going into the third period. The game was back and forth, and the Jr. Gulls came within one goal making it 3-4 midway through the third. As the clock wound down, the Jr Gulls tied the game with 44 seconds left in the third. They then scored the game winner just 10 seconds into the overtime period. What a way to win the banner!
The Peewee B team had a good weekend going 2-2. The two victories came against SoCal teams, the Pasadena Maple Leafs (9-0) and the Anaheim Ice (9-1). However, they played two tough games against a very solid Vancouver Attack (1-5), and the Flying Penguins (1-4) from Utah.
The Bantam B team came together quick this weekend and played solid hockey to earn a spot in the championship game. With a round robin record of 3-0-1, the Bantam B team had wins over the Summer Hawks (5-1), Bandits (8-1), and Cal Sun (4-2), and a come-from-behind tie to the Summer Sharks who we faced again in the championship. The Summer Sharks came out strong, pulled ahead, and didn’t look back beating our Gulls 8-4. Congratulations for a great second-place finish!
The Bantam Open team finished the round robin 3-1 with wins over OCHC (6-2), Vympel (9-1), and USA Skates (5-2). The only loss came from the tough Pembina Hawks from Canada (1-2) in a game that either team could have won. The team just missed the playoff finishing in third place after the round robin games. Nonetheless, it was a solid weekend filled with great hockey!
The Midget A team also just missed the crossover in a three-way tie, losing the goal differential by one. Nonetheless, the Midget A team played solid hockey going 2-2 beating the Summer Hawks (2-0) and Jserra JV (4-1). The two losses came from the SoCal Bulldogs (6-8) and 911 Hockey (0-6) in the consolation.
It was a great weekend of hockey! Thanks to the players, families, and coaches for their support…
Go Gulls!
