Ryan "Rhyno" McDonough Page
To the San Diego Hockey community: It is with deep sadness that we report the untimely passing of one of our alumni. Ryan "Rhyno" McDonough tragically passed away last week. Ryan was a member of the San Diego Hawks, the San Diego Storm and the San Diego Gulls. He was a very talented player who was well lilked by all those who knew him. He touched the lives of many of us with his outstanding play and gentlemanly conduct both on and off the ice. He always had a kind word and a smile for everyone. This tradgedy reminds of of how fragile and short this life we enjoy really is. He will be sorely missed. In honor of Ryan, who wore the number 18 throughout his career with the San Diego Amatuer Hockey Club, our AAA teams will be wearing a black patch with the number 18 on it. We will be seeking permission from SCAHA for the remainder of our teams to do so as well. Our deepest sympathies and heartfelt prayers go out to the family and freinds of Ryan. Services for Ryan will be Friday, 9-12-03 at 12:30 pm at the LDS Church on the corner of Monroe and Chestnut in Carlsbad (across from Carlsbad High School) A trust fund has been set up in Ryan's name at Washington Mutual Bank. Donataions should be made to the "Ryan McDounough Memorial Fund". Funds will go to benefit youth hockey. Tim Pickett

I first met Ryan when he was a pee-wee playing for the Ice-floe Storm. He was one of those kids that had a sparkle in his eye every time he took the ice. He was the consummate team player that always put others ahead of himself. He continued his career and I was fortunate enough to coach him as a bantam player with the AA Gulls and once again three years ago at a midget AAA tournament. The impact he had on the lives of those who were his teammates was evident by how many people attended the service for him on Friday 12 September 2003. I think that as a group we are all still shocked and saddened by the passing of this young man. Ryan was a huge part of a group of young men that paved the way for so many of the kids today. He made it possible for kids to believe they could be from California and succeed in the game of hockey. He was always there with a smile on his face and a quick, smart/witty remark. He will be missed by all of us that had the honor to know him. I only hope that all the kids playing this game in San Diego honor the memory and life of this great young man. I think we should retire #18, Ryan's number. We should also hang #18 banners in each rink in San Diego to serve as a reminder that Ryan is there, smiling and watching all of us. Joe Stanczyk
